ysc-profileSri Yalamanchili Satyanarayana Chowdary ,(popularly known as SujanaChowdary), is the Union Minister for State, Ministry of Science and Technology, & Earth Sciences (MoST& ES), Government of India, since November 9, 2014, when he took oath of office and secrecy.

Sri Chowdaryis a Minister in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government led by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, representing the alliance partner, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which he represents as Member of Parliament, in Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh, since June, 2010.

He has been hailed as the person who, led by the vision and leadership of TDP National President and Chief Minister Sri N Chandrababu Naidu, has helped his State of Andhra Pradesh make tremendous strides by getting Special Package for AP in lieu of the statutorily-impossible-to-get Special Category Status, 100% Central Funding for the multi-purpose project of Pollavaram, through Nabard (a first in Independent India’s history), got the 104th Science Congress to Tirupati, and had the National Science Museum allocated to the State, and is pushing for the dream of a Nobel Prize for an Indian working in India by 2035.


The Ministry of Science & Technology (DST) promotes new areas of science and technology and plays the role of a nodal department for organising, coordinating and promoting science and technology activities in India.

The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) is mandated to provide the nation with best possible services in forecasting the monsoons and other weather/climate parameters, ocean state, earthquakes, tsunamis and other phenomena related to earth systems through well integrated programmes. The Ministry also deals with science and technology for exploration and exploitation of ocean resources (living and non-living), and playsa nodal role for Antarctic &Arctic, and Southern Ocean, research.

Harnessing his keen interest in research and knowledge in sciences based on his masters’ degree in engineering, and continual reading and interactions with academics, scientists and industry professionals, SriYSC is keenly working on big targets goal to achieve Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision and Cabinet Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan’s plans to make India one of the top 3 sciences & tech nations in the world.

Personally, SriY S Chowdary is keenly pushing to build world-class Nobel Prize worthy research eco-system in the country, with a goal for a prize within two decades.


As a highly disciplined and dedicated Telugu Desam Party (TDP) since the time he joined politics, and a Member of Parliament, the party has been bestowed upon him with ever-increasing role and responsibilities based on his ability to deliver results. SriChowdary was elected to Rajya Sabha on June 22, 2010. He currently holds the coveted post of the Leader of the Parliamentary Party of the TDP.

Before joining the Cabinet, SriYS Chowdarywas a very active Member of Rajya Sabha, who participated in all important issues raised in the House and met all responsibilities towards the country, state, people and party.

According to the PRS report, his track record of Parliament is excellent. His attendance in the House is over 79% above the national average of 77%. He has participated in 37 debates relating to issues of importance to his state of Andhra Pradesh and national issues. The National Average of participation in debates by Rajya Sabha Member comes to 29.8. He has asked 343 Questions in the House from various ministries against a National Average of questions asked at 213.

He has participated in Rajya Sabha proceedings by raising Special Mention on many important national and state-level issues, Motion of Thanks on President’s Address on behalf of his Party, Party’s reaction and response on General Budget and fought to present his State and Party’s point of view on subjects like Agriculture, Finance, Water Resources, Railways, Social Justice and Empowerment, Labour and Employment, among others.

He strongly fought against the undemocractic and unfair manner of division of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh and the injustice done to people of the now-residual AP to carve our Telangana.


Promoting social welfare activities through ‘Sujana Foundation’, especially to serve underprivileged sections in areas of education and healthcare has been a great priority for SriYS Chowdary. He takes active participation in relief works undertaken for those affected due to natural calamities.

With the firm belief that nurturing entrepreneurial spirit in present generation of youth is essential for the rapid economic growth of the Country, SriChowdary lends proactive support in organising motivational camps and entrepreneurial development workshops for youth.

He has an insightful understanding of issues hindering rapid growth of Indian manufacturing industry and actively works with Government agencies and industrial bodies in developing implementable solutions for these issues. He has also been associated with the development of Medical Education.


Y S Chowdary is a Post-Graduate in Mechanical Engineering, with specialization in Machine Tools from the PSG College of Engineering, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He graduated in engineering from the CBIT, Hyderabad.


A distinguished technocrat entrepreneur, he has played a major role in establishing the Sujana Group of Companies, an over three-decades old group, along with his friends and associates, providing direct and indirect employment to over 10,000 persons.

In 2010, he has relinquished all executive responsibilities in the management of the Groupin favour of his associates and the professionals who manage the companies. In 2014, he has resigned from all posts in the Group. Supporting his view that all entrepreneurship and wealth creation must support philanthropy, he has reduced his stake and holding in the Group to less than 1% and donated most of his personal wealth for charitable activities.


YS Chowdary hails from a highly educated family of bureaucrats, government officials and farmers. His maternal grandfather was a graduate and a prosperous farmer. His paternal grandfather, an IPS officer, retired as a senior police officer and received an award for his services from the then Prime Minister Sri Lal Bahadur Sashtri.His fatherserved in the State Government and retired as chief engineer, who received several awards and citations for his exemplary and honest services.

SriChowdary is married; his wife,Smt. Y Padmaja, is a home-maker. They have two children – a son and a daughter – Karthik, who studied Economics and Entrepreneurship at the University Of Massachusetts, Boston, USA and Naga Chandini, who is currently pursing BBM in Singapore.
