President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee has said that innovation is the key to Progress and Prosperity of the country. He was inaugurating the weeklong ‘Festival of at Rashtrapathi Bhavan in New Delhi today. The President said the process of innovation converts knowledge into social good and economic wealth. He asserted that this would encourage the engagement of talent within the society to improve the quality of life.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Dr. Harsh Vardhan expressed happiness that the National Innovation Foundation (NIF) an autonomous organization attached to his ministry had paved the path for grassroots innovators with concrete incentives and institutional support to serve the society. He said in the recent union budget, the government decided to create Atal Innovation Mission in the NITI and has embarked upon a major policy of Self-Employment and Talent Utilization (SETU) for supporting startups by common people. He called upon NIF to throw up many more challenges in the field of sanitation, quality drinking water and other socially relevant areas where our society has witnessed too much of inertia far too long. He also urged the scientists to come forward to join hands with the grassroots innovators and students to take their ideas forward.

The Minister of state for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Shri Y.S. Chowdary, who also spoke on the occasion, hoped that all grassroots innovations that are being encouraged would contribute for the improvement of quality of life in Rural India.

The President also gave away 8th National Biennial Awards for Grassroots Innovations at the function. The Competition for these awards ran from April 1, 2011 to March 31, 2013 and saw over 35,000 submissions. Out of these 41 awardees were selected.

The Fodder Cutter machine has in-built safety mechanism which consists of a clutch, brake and automatic lock system operated by a foot lever. It prevents accident as one can stop the rotating blades immediately by pressing a lever.

Shri Pranab Mukherjee also interacted with some of the participants of the In-Residence Programmes for Innovation Scholars and Writers being organized from 7th to 21st March, 2015 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The Festival is being organized by the President’s Secretariat in collaboration with the NIF.

Details of the weeklong Festival of Innovations include:

Monday, 9th March 2015 – A Workshop of innovative children for harnessing their creativity in order to overcome the difficulties of economically disadvantaged children.

Tuesday, 10th March 2015 – Meeting of National Innovation Clubs and interaction between grassroots innovators and entrepreneurs; sharing of experiences between Innovation Clubs and a Poster exhibition on outstanding achievements by National Clubs and Best Technology Business Incubators.

Wednesday, 11th March 2015 – Visit by Minister of Health to see the medical science and bio-technology innovations in the Exhibition.

Thursday, 12th March 2015 – National consultation on innovations for Clean India or ‘Swachh Bharat’.

Friday, 13th March 2015 – A Summary of key recommendations emanating from the Roundtable discussions will be presented to the President of India who will also address the gathering. He will also interact with leaders of banking and financial sectors about financing innovations.
